Today is our day for visiting the neolithic remains in the neighbourhood of the hotel. We start off with Maeshowe, a grassy mound with a rectangular stone chamber insidet. You reach the central chamber through a long low passage which appears absolutely dark as you walk crouched down towards the centre - a spooky feeling which is quite reversed when you leave the chamber and walk towards the light outside. Inside the chamber, whose function is not clear, visiting Vikings from a much later age have left testimony of their presence in the shape of several runic inscriptions. The guide without whom you cannot enter, is very good. After Maeshowe, we go on to the Standing Stones, a circle of stones of which only three of any size are left standing. They, however, are very impressive as they stand in their circle of green grass. Close to it is a settlement with remains of neolithic houses.
