For the last two nights of our stay on Orkney, we have booked into a hotel at Stenness, where we're going with a stop at the Brough of Gurness on the way. At the very beginning of the day, the weather is fine, and only a small mishap with one of the bikes keeps us back. Our host, however, knows exactly what is needed, so we're able to take off in good time. As we approach Gurness, black clouds appear, and the wind freshens, so we arrive at Gurness in a shower, and walk round the very interesting site in the rain. There's a central round broch or tower and the remains of several smaller buildings around it. This is originally a Pictish settlement which means it is much younger than the neolithic sites we've seen, around 500 AD. The rain stops eventually, and we're able to eat our lunch on the small beach at the foot of the broch. The wind is stronger now, and as we turn west towards Stenness, we get it straight against us, so we're very glad, when we spot our hotel near the Standing Stones at Stenness. This is a more expensive hotel with a very elegant dining-room and lounge where we seem to be the only guests.
