A Bicycle Trip to Shetland and Orkney Isles

The next stop is the Brough of Birsay which is situated on a small island off the coast at Birsay, only accessible at low tide. This occurs at 3,30 pm today, so we wait around a bit on the beach. As the tide recedes, the causeway to the island materializes under the water, and eventually it becomes dry enough to cross. On the other side are the remains of a Norse settlement and the ruin of a small church and a bishop's palace or monastery. On top of the island is a lighthouse and to the other side a dramatic view of waves breaking on the sheer cliffs and birds nesting on the vertical cliff-side. After this expedition, we head back to our hotel and a nice Sunday dinner.
