A Bicycle Trip to Shetland and Orkney Isles July 2002
Ring of Broger, Orkney

Further down the road, we cross to the peninsula between Harray and Stenness lakes on a short causeway, and shortly after, we come to the Ring of Brodgar, another stone circle of an even more imposing size, and with many more stones standing. The circling ditch which was dug to a depth of 3 mts is still discernible, covered in flowering heather like the rest of the site. The dark stones set against the gathering clouds have a very dramatic impact. Near the Ring there's a small harbour for anglers on the lake where we eat our lunch away from the stream of tourists gathering among the stones. After dawdling around the stones for a while, we return to the hotel to enjoy its various facilities.
