Today we wake up to perfect weather and proceed to Scara Brae, a unique 5000-year old Iron Age village at the Bay of Skaill. It's a fantastic sight, wonderfully preserved dwellings which have been buried beneath sand until the 1920s. The ticket also includes a visit to Skaill House on whose land the village is situated, and whose owner discovered the site in 1850. A nice country house preserved as it stood in the 1950s. There's a strange fascination these days with experiencing how the gentry lived.
A picnic lunch at Skaill Bay where people are actually bathing, very hardy, for the wind is cold though the sun is out.
