Arrived in Lerwick at 8, we go straight to the Tourist Office to arrange accomodation on Shetland. We book for all the days we are here which is quite a relief, as we are told that it's a very busy time with sparse accomodation which becomes obvious, as we travel through the large landscapes where no B&B signs are seen, and only the occasional hotel. Our first stop (for two nights) is at Cunningsburgh in the South Mainland, not very far from Lerwick. Our hostess will not be home till 5:30, so we travel a bit further south to Sandwick and Hoswick, two villages on the East Coast. Sandwick sports a baker who is also a grocer, and Hoswick has a knitting factory and a Community Centre with an exhibition about Shetland life in former times and a café which is very welcome. The weather has been mostly good which in the Shetlands means a high wind, a fairly low temperature and alternating periods of sun and drizzle. On our way back to the B&B, however, it starts to rain in earnest, so we are very glad to get in-doors. There are no eating places within easy cycling distance, so we dine on snacks, but book a dinner the next night with our hostess.
