Fortunately, the bad weather has let up today, so we retrace our way towards Lerwick, but this time without the detour to Voe. The road towards Lerwick goes straight north-south through an empty landscape with bare hills on both sides, but this time the ascents are gentler and pose no problems. We end up with a long descent down to Lerwick and to the last B&B we have booked beforehand. It was not really a good idea to book for a week in advance after all, as on some days we might not have wanted to go quite as far as we did. On the other hand, the B&Bs seem to be few and far between in Shetland which makes it a little hazardous to rely on chance. It's a bit of a dilemma really. In the evening we visit a Viking exhibition which is dedicated to the annual election of a new "Giezer Jarl" and the subsequent torch-lit procession through town which ends with a Viking boat, especially constructed for the purpose, being burnt in the Market Square. Each new Jarl assumes a Nordic name and appears in an outfit designed specially for the occasion with rather Wagnerian helmet and chain-mail tunic etc. All great fun!
