Tuesday 4 July 2000

We wake up to a nice day, perfect for cycling, a bit overcast with the wind at our backs. Departure at 9, west towards Helensburgh. The traffic is fairly heavy which is not very nice on quite narrow roads, so when we reach Helensburgh at around 11, we decide to go a bit further to Garelochhead and catch the train to Oban at  1:30, the aim being to reach the Hebrides a day earlier than planned.
The train, when it comes, turns out to have a special luggage compartment with hooks in the ceiling for bikes which are transported free of charge. The ride takes us along Loch Lomond with marvellous views of the lake whenever there’s a gap in the trees growing along the track, which are much appreciated by the many American tourists on board.
