A Bicycle Trip to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island

Another day in Summerside. We spend the morning walking around the old part of the town, guidebook in hand. There are many lovely old wooden houses, including the one we are staying at, dating from the last half of the 19th C. when Summerside had its golden age of lumber and shipbuilding. When this era came to an end, the town had its second period of prosperity with the breeding of silver foxes which became all the rage in the beginning of the 20th C. The story of silver fox farming can be viewed at the International Fox Museum in Fitzroy Street.
The afternoon is spent cycling and dawdling along the wooden harbour promenade at the Shooting Gallery Shore, and with a trip to the modern outskirts of town, where the big shopping malls are situated, and the houses are smaller and closer to each other, but still carry traces of the style of the old wooden houses in downtown Summerside.
In the evening there's a performance in the harbour of an Irish folk music group with pennywhistle, guitar, violin and Irish drums. Another lovely evening!
